You need a new electric sauna heater and are now faced with three important questions:
-
Which sauna heater is right for me?
-
And what power is right for my sauna cabin?
-
How do I calculate the necessary power?
The sauna heater is the heart of every sauna. Depending on the type of sauna, you can choose between a Finnish, a bio combi sauna heater, and a wood-fired sauna heater.
But what power does my sauna heater need, you ask?
The power of the sauna heater primarily depends on the size of the sauna cabin.
- The volume of the sauna cabin = HxWxD.
- Glass walls and large windows must be added
- For outdoor cabins, you may need to take a stronger sauna heater (but must be calculated individually)
A sauna heater should never be chosen to be too weak or too strong in terms of power. In the first case, the sauna heater simply won't be able to heat the cabin, and in the latter case, the oversized sauna heater will shut off before the temperature has even been able to distribute throughout the room.
When making your calculations, always consider the environment in which your cabin is located (inside, outside) and how strong the insulation is. If there is an existing glass wall, it must be added to the cabin volume, and a correspondingly powerful heater must be used.
Recommended heater power for EOS electric sauna heaters:
(for a normally insulated sauna indoors without large glass surfaces)
- 3.0 kW from 3 to 4 m³
- 3.5 kW from 3 to 4.5 m³
- 4.5 kW from 4 to 6 m³
- 6.0 kW from 6 to 8 m³
- 7.5 kW from 7 to 10 m³
- 9.0 kW from 9 to 14 m³
- 10.5 kW from 11 to 15 m³
- 12.0 kW from 14 to 18 m³
- 15.0 kW from 18 to 25 m³
- 18.0 kW from 24 to 30 m³
- 21.0 kW from 24 to 34 m³
- 24.0 kW from 35 to 40 m³
The heater outputs may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer. You should inform yourself on the manufacturer's websites or consult your dealer.
The sauna heater manufacturer EOS offers a heater configurator on its website.By entering the width, depth, height, indoor or outdoor sauna, with or without a vaporizer, and an existing glass proportion, the suitable heaters will be displayed. Click here to be redirected to the EOS page.
Can a sauna also be operated without a high-voltage current connection?
Wood-fired sauna heaters, as the name suggests, are only operated with wood.
But there's nothing stopping you from using electric sauna heaters either.
EOS sauna heaters with 3 and 3.5 kW only require a 230 V AC connection. From 4.5 kW, you will already need a 400 V 3N AC high-voltage current connection.
However, you can also use the more powerful sauna heaters without a high-voltage current connection. For this, manufacturers offer an extra distribution unit that enables such a connection.
Harvia and Sentiotec also offer certain sauna heater models that already include and enable such a connection under certain conditions.

What sauna heater models are available?
For electric sauna heaters, you have the choice between:
-
Wall-mounted heater:
As the name suggests, these are sauna heaters that are hung on the wall. It is the most affordable option and is available as a Finnish and as a bio sauna heater.
-
Freestanding heater:
Available in different sizes and shapes. These sauna heaters can stand on the floor (not on wooden floors) - here, too, there are two versions. Models that stand on the floor but have the connection box at the back and are secured to the wall, as well as models whose connection box is not outwardly visible, so these heaters can also be placed in front of glass walls. Also available as a Finnish and as a bio sauna heater.
-
Behind-wall or under-bench heater:
These sauna heaters are hidden in the sauna cabin. Either under a sauna bench or behind a partition wall. The heat distribution remains optimal even though the sauna heater cannot be seen. Also available as a Finnish and as a bio sauna heater.

Finnish Sauna Heaters
Finnish sauna heaters are known for their traditional construction and high temperature. These heaters typically use stones onto which water is poured to create steam. Equipped with powerful heating elements, Finnish sauna heaters offer fast heating times and enable intense, dry heat. Perfect for lovers of classic sauna sessions, Finnish sauna heaters promote relaxation and cleanse the body through intense sweating.
-
Bio-Combi Sauna Heaters
Bio-combi sauna heaters offer a 2-in-1 solution. They combine the best of both worlds by allowing both traditional dry and softer, more humid sauna experiences. These innovative heaters offer the flexibility to switch between dry and humid heat, allowing the sauna to be adapted to individual preferences. Bio-combi heaters are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to enable both traditional Finnish sauna sessions and milder, steaming sessions. They offer a versatile sauna experience for all users.
Both types of sauna heaters contribute to creating a relaxing and health-promoting sauna pleasure. The choice between Finnish and bio-combi heaters depends on personal preferences and the desired sauna climate.
To perform its work and enable the desired temperature, the heater requires a suitable sauna control unit. There are external sauna control units and sauna heaters that already have an integrated control.
However, if you want more setting options, you should choose an external control. The individual models differ in user-friendliness, appearance, functionality, and quality.
